‘There Ain’t No Black in The Union Jack?’
The contributions of black peoples are often overlooked in British society, mostly reduced to harmful stereotypes that only serve to fuel prejudice.
During World War 2, tens of thousands of men and women fought the forces of fascism and to defend their ‘mother country’, Great Britain. In the aftermath, citizens of many British colonies were invited to continue supporting their ‘mother country’, but upon arrival these migrants found that the image held in their mind of Great Britain didn’t quite resonate in reality.
This painting represents the vast contribution of many Caribbean nations and their value to Britain. Portrayed in this manner, these contributions cannot be overlooked and enables us to feel seen, valued and represented in British society.
